I don’t read a lot of fiction. However, while out on our anniversary holiday a few weeks ago my wife and I both picked up a fictional book to read. I was about to walk out of the book store with nothing in my hand, and of course the kindly bookseller wouldn’t allow that to happen, so based upon her recommendation I left with the novel “A Conspiracy of Paper“.
I have to say I haven’t enjoyed a novel so much in quite a long time. It’s a murder/mystery set in the 18th century during the rise of the London Stock Exchange. I won’t say much since you can read the synopsis on Amazon, but I’ll just say it’s about a Jewish “thief-taker” who comes to suspect that his father was murdered instead of accidentally killed.
Those who know my fictional tastes know that, like my father before me, I love mysteries. This is one of the best I’ve read. It was enthralling right from the first page and I couldn’t hardly put it down. The characters are colorful enough and mysterious enough to keep you guessing throughout and the protagonist is believable as you start to understand what it would be like to be a Jew in 17th century England.
I recommend “A Conspiracy of Paper” and am looking forward to reading David Liss‘ other novels.
